The Law Firm AI Visibility Audit: What to Check First

An AI visibility audit shows whether a law firm is actually being named, skipped, or misread by tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. The first checks should focus on visibility by market and practice area, source citations, third-party profiles, and whether the firm is clear enough to be recommended.

The Law Firm AI Visibility Audit: What To Check First

TL;DR An AI visibility audit shows whether a law firm is actually being named, skipped, or misread by tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. The first checks should focus on visibility by market and practice area, source citations, third-party profiles, and whether the firm is clear enough to be recommended.

Nobody warned the managing partner at a midsize personal injury firm in Dallas that ChatGPT had never heard of them.

He found out from a client. She’d asked the AI for the best personal injury lawyer in Dallas and got back three names. His wasn’t one of them. He’d been spending $15,000 a month on Google Ads. Zero idea this was happening.

That’s where an AI visibility audit starts. Not with a slide deck. With the uncomfortable question: do you actually show up?

Most firms don’t know.

And not knowing is costing them.

Five Things To Check First

An audit should answer these before anything else:

Does the firm show up at all when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude for a lawyer in their category and city?

Which practice areas get mentioned, and which ones get skipped over?

What markets are working? The main city might be fine. The suburbs could be invisible.

Which platforms are recommending the firm? They don’t all pull from the same sources.

Who’s getting named instead?

That last one stings. But it’s the most useful data point you’ll find.

Then You Dig Into The Why

Once you know whether you show up, you can start figuring out what’s holding you back.

That means looking at directory and third-party presence on platforms like Super Lawyers, Justia, Best Lawyers, Chambers, and Best Law Firms — and whether those profiles are actually complete or just claimed and abandoned.

It means looking at citation patterns. Which third-party sites mention the firm by name, and do they describe it the right way?

Attorney bio quality. Practice page clarity. FAQ and answer-first content depth.

And consistency. Does the firm’s name, location, practice areas, and positioning say the same thing everywhere? Or does Yelp say one thing, Avvo say another, and the website say a third?

This is where AI visibility gets real.

Measurable Beats Vague Every Time

The firms that get the most out of this work treat AI visibility like an operating metric. Not a theory. A number.

“We show up in 2 out of 6 test queries” is something you can fix.

“I think we might be okay on AI” is not.

The audit turns the second thing into the first. That’s why it matters. And that’s why it’s always the first move.
