We Asked AI for the Best Lawyer in Columbia. Here’s Who It Named.

TL;DR: Columbia is a cautionary tale. Because the name is shared by cities in three states, the AI tools sometimes couldn’t tell which one you meant and answered with the city instead of a firm.

We ran thousands of Columbia queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. When they did name South Carolina firms, Nelson Mullins and Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd led.

Someone in Columbia, South Carolina needs a lawyer. They ask ChatGPT. Sometimes it names a firm. Sometimes it asks, in effect, which Columbia they mean.

We ran that question, and 24 more like it, across every practice area in Columbia, on four AI tools. Columbia behaved unlike any other market in the study.

When the Machine Isn't Sure

Google ranked pages. The AI tools recommend, handing back a short list. But a recommendation engine has to know what you’re asking about first.

Columbia is shared by cities in South Carolina, Missouri, and Maryland, and the tools felt that.

What AI Says About Columbia Lawyers

We read 2,932 clean Columbia answers across 25 practice areas.

Two things set Columbia apart. First, Gemini named a firm in about 30% of its answers here, far above the 3 to 5% it managed in other cities. It was answering more, but often by naming the city across states rather than a firm.

In several practice areas, the top “results” the tools returned were literally Columbia, South Carolina, Columbia, Missouri, and Columbia, Maryland. The machines were unsure which one you meant.

Second, the four tools agreed with each other less here than in any other market, overlapping about 4%.

When the tools did name South Carolina firms, the leaders were clear.

In securities and appellate work, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, Nexsen Pruet, and Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd.

In personal injury, the Goings Law Firm, McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates, and The Solomon Law Group. Super Lawyers (15.2%) and Justia (11.6%) led the sources, and 91% of Perplexity answers cited a directory.

Being Named Isn't Being the Best

This counts who AI mentions, not who wins cases. In Columbia, there’s an extra wrinkle: a firm that doesn’t make its South Carolina location unmistakable risks getting lost in the confusion between three cities.

How to Show Up in Columbia's AI Results

Make your location impossible to misread. Your pages, your Google Business Profile, and your directory listings should all say Columbia, South Carolina plainly, every time.

Get onto Super Lawyers and Justia, keep your details identical everywhere, and run the four tools yourself to see when they name a firm and when they name a city. In a market this ambiguous, clarity is an edge.

The Question That Matters

Tonight someone in Columbia will ask AI to name a lawyer. Sometimes a name, sometimes a shrug.

The only question is whether yours is the name.
