We Asked AI for the Best Lawyer in New York. Here’s Who It Named.

New York is the most locked market in the study. The top firms take a bigger share than anywhere, the tools agree with each other most, and Chambers carries more weight here than in any other city. We ran thousands of New York queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Cravath, Sullivan & Cromwell, and Paul Weiss led the commercial fields.

We Asked AI For The Best Lawyer In New York. Here's Who It Named.

TL;DR New York is the most locked market in the study.

A New York company needs deal counsel. Someone asks Perplexity for the best business law firm in the city. Three names come back, and on this question, the tools mostly agree.

We ran that question, and 24 more like it, across every practice area in New York, on four AI tools. New York was the tightest market we saw.

Ranking Versus Recommending

Google ranked pages and let people choose. The AI tools recommend, a short list with no page two.

In New York, that list is harder to crack than in any other city we studied.

What AI Says About New York Lawyers

We read 2,022 clean New York answers across 25 practice areas.

This is the most concentrated market in the study. The top 3 firms in a typical area pulled about 39% of the names, and the tail was shorter than elsewhere, around 51 firms per area.

The four tools also agreed with each other more here, overlapping about 8%, the highest in the study.

The names are the marquee firms. In business law, Cravath, Swaine & Moore, Sullivan & Cromwell, and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

In civil litigation, Cravath, Paul, Weiss, and Sullivan & Cromwell.

In intellectual property, Fish & Richardson and Kirkland & Ellis.

In real estate, Fried, Frank and Paul, Weiss. The consumer areas opened up: criminal defense led with Brafman & Associates, and child custody with Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan.

One New York signal: Chambers carried more weight here than anywhere else, showing up in 7.8% of Perplexity’s sources, behind Super Lawyers (13.1%) and Justia (8.6%). Gemini named a firm in about 5% of answers.

Being Named Isn't Being The Best

This counts who AI mentions, not who wins cases. A firm with strong profiles will out-appear a better one the machines can’t see. In New York’s locked commercial areas, breaking in takes more; the consumer areas leave more room.
