How Business Law Firms Show up in AI Search

Business law is harder for AI search because the category is broad and ambiguous. Firms that define clear service lines, build specific pages, and reinforce their positioning across citations are easier for AI systems to understand and recommend.

Business law is harder to show up in than most firms expect.

Not because the competition is fiercer. Because the category is fuzzier.

Think about what “business lawyer” actually means. It could be transactions. It could be M&A. It could be contract disputes, startup formation, employment matters, or franchise law. The same search term points to 6 different kinds of firm.

That ambiguity is the real problem.

In our 30-day research, business law had weaker direct firm-site visibility than the other top practice areas in the citation-transparent layer. Broader authority sources took up more of the space — BCGSearch, Best Law Firms, and high-authority firm sites with clear institutional footprints.

Directories still mattered. But this category leaned harder on firms that looked established.

Here’s what happens when a firm is vague. AI gets a query like “best business lawyer in [city]” and starts sorting. It finds 3 firms with strong, specific service pages — corporate formation, commercial contracts, business litigation, each with its own content. Then it finds your firm with one page that says “we help businesses of all sizes with a wide range of legal matters.”

The machine moves on.

It’s not punishing you. It just doesn’t know what you do.

The firms that break through in business law have sharper positioning. Clear service lines. Attorney pages built around specific business matters. Supporting content that targets how actual clients search — not “business law services” but “commercial lease dispute attorney [city]” or “LLC formation attorney [city].”

Reduce ambiguity. Make the category fit obvious. Then build outside confirmation through third-party profiles and citations.

Business law rewards specificity. Always has.
