We Asked AI for the Best Lawyer in Charlotte. Here’s Who It Named.

Ask AI for the best lawyer in Charlotte and the answer comes off the directories, not firm websites. Only half of cited sources were law firm sites, the lowest in the study. We ran thousands of Charlotte queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Names like Moore & Van Allen and Arnold & Smith led their fields.

We Asked AI For The Best Lawyer In Charlotte. Here's Who It Named.

TL;DR Ask AI for the best lawyer in Charlotte and the answer comes off the directories, not firm websites. Only half of cited sources were law firm sites, the lowest in the study. We ran thousands of Charlotte queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Names like Moore & Van Allen and Arnold & Smith led their fields.

Someone in Charlotte gets charged with a crime on a Friday night. They ask ChatGPT for the best defense lawyer in the city. A few names come back, and they call one.

We ran that question, and 24 more like it, across every practice area in Charlotte, on four AI tools.

From Ten Links To Three Names

Google was a ranking engine. The AI tools recommend instead, handing back a short list with no page two.

In Charlotte, where those names come from says a lot about how to get on the list.

What AI Says About Charlotte Lawyers

We read 2,527 clean Charlotte answers across 25 practice areas.

The sources told the story. Every Perplexity answer that cited anything leaned on a directory, and only half pointed at a firm’s own website, the lowest firm-site share of any city we studied. Super Lawyers (14%) and Justia (12.8%) led.

The firms: in criminal defense, Arnold & Smith took more than a fifth of every answer, with Roberts Law Group and Powers Law Firm behind.

In intellectual property, Moore & Van Allen, Alston & Bird, and Parker Poe.

In tax, Moore & Van Allen and Parker Poe.

In real estate, Robinson Bradshaw and K&L Gates. The big banking-town names show up across the commercial areas.

The top 3 firms in a typical area pulled about 30% of the names, with roughly 60 firms behind. Probate and products liability stayed wide open.

The tools overlapped about 6%, and Gemini named a firm in only about 5% of answers.

Being Named Isn't Being The Best

This counts who AI mentions, not who wins cases. A firm with strong directory profiles will out-appear a better firm the machines can’t see. In Charlotte, where the answers run on directories more than firm sites, that profile is doing most of the work.

How To Show Up In Charlotte's AI Results

Because Charlotte answers lean on directories over websites, start there: Super Lawyers and Justia first, then Best Lawyers, Avvo, and Martindale. Fill every field and keep your details identical everywhere. Run the four tools for your practice area to see who’s named, and check all four, since each crowns a different set.

The Question That Matters

Tonight someone in Charlotte will ask AI to name a lawyer. A few names, fast, no page two.
