We Asked AI for the Best Lawyer in Charleston. Here’s Who It Named.

TL;DR: In Charleston, the directories are the answer. Every single Perplexity answer we saw cited one, and only about half pointed at a firm’s own website. We ran thousands of Charleston queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Leaders like the Steinberg Law Firm in injury and The Peck Law Firm in family came up most.

A family in Charleston needs a lawyer for a custody fight. They ask ChatGPT. A few names come back, and they make a call.

We ran that question, and 24 more like it, across every practice area in Charleston, on four AI tools. One pattern jumped out fast.

Where the Answer Comes From

Google ranked pages and let people choose. The AI tools recommend, handing back three names and a reason, with no page two.

In Charleston, those names came from one place more than any other: the directories.

What AI Says About Charleston Lawyers

We read 2,815 clean Charleston answers across 25 practice areas.

Every Perplexity answer that cited sources leaned on a directory. 100% of them. Only about half pointed at a law firm’s own website. Super Lawyers showed up in 17.5% of sources and Justia in 14.8%, the heaviest directory tilt in the study.

The firms themselves: in family law, The Peck Law Firm, the Rosen Law Firm, and Charleston Family Law Group.

In personal injury, the Steinberg Law Firm, Clore Law Group, and Joye Law Firm.

In business law, Nexsen Pruet, Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, and Womble Bond Dickinson. In civil litigation, Motley Rice led.

The top 3 firms in a typical Charleston area pulled about 31% of the names, with roughly 59 firms behind them. Some areas, like immigration and elder law, were wide open. The tools overlapped about 6%, and Gemini named a firm in only about 4% of answers.

Being Named Isn't Being the Best

This counts who AI mentions, not who wins cases. A firm with strong directory profiles will out-appear a better firm the machines can’t see. In Charleston, where the answers run entirely on directories, that point is sharp: your profile does the talking.

How to Show Up in Charleston's AI Results

This is the market where directory work matters most. Get onto Super Lawyers and Justia first, and fill every field. Then claim the rest, Best Lawyers, Avvo, Martindale. Keep your firm’s name and details identical across all of them, because the tools are reading those profiles, not your homepage.

Run the four tools yourself for your practice area to see where you stand, and check all four, since each names a different set.

The Question That Matters

Tonight someone in Charleston will ask AI to name a lawyer. A few names, fast, no page two.

The only question is whether yours is one of them.
