This is Your Marketing Minute from Forward Push, and today we are going to talk about SEO, search engine optimization. Let’s get started. Well, let’s start right at the beginning. What is SEO, search engine optimization? What does that mean? Well, it has to do with the quality of your website and its content and how Google primarily sees it. If you have great SEO, you’re going to be seeing more in a search engine, which means hopefully more people are going to come to your website, thus increasing your bottom line, because now you’re going to have more customers or clients.

So what exactly is a search engine looking for? Well, think of it this way. A search engine is no different than you or I. We go to Google, we type in a question because we are looking for an answer. We’ve got a problem. We need an answer. We got a question. We need an answer. And what the search engines are doing is cataloging the Internet to find the best answers for you. And they do that by looking at your website, at your blogs, PDF, video, any content that is available on the Internet

These search engines are crawling them. Let’s say they’re indexing them and that’s how they get into a search engine results page and hopefully you’re towards the top. Let’s talk about a search engine result page, SERP. When you do a Google search and the answers come up, the pages divided into different sections.

Typically at the top, you’re going to see ads then that might be followed by a map. So that is great. If you’re doing a search for X profession near me, you’re going to be there in the map. And then underneath it is the organic rankings. And that’s what we’re talking about today. Search engine optimization is how you can affect the organic rankings. Ten places on a SERP where are you going to fall based on the quality of your content?

And as we look at that search engine results page, we can see that the organic results take up the majority of the page. That’s why concentrating on your search engine optimization is important. First off, takes up a lot of the page, like I said. But secondly, there’s a huge portion of the public that won’t click on an ad, that won’t click on the map listing and they scroll right down and find place number 1, 2 and 3 in a search engine listing, which is why you need to make sure that your website and its content rates high.
