Recently, UM, a division of IPG Mediabrands, conducted their social media Wave 7 study. Their participants ranged in ages between 16-54, and they asked them to rate the level of their agreement with the statement that there are too many companies involved in social networking. The results may be surprising. Within the U.S., 47.1 percent of respondents had some level of agreement. Only 18.6 percent disagreed. 48.9 percent of the respondents who agreed were men and 45.4 percent were women. In addition, 46% of respondents between the ages of 16-44 exhibited a range of agreement, and 45-54-year-olds agreed at a rate of 50 percent. The ethnicity breakdown of those who agreed was: 54.2 percent Asian Americans, 49.9 percent Hispanics, 47 percent Caucasians, and 43.4 percent of African-American.

However, the study showed that being involved in social media is not a negative. They also asked the respondents their range of agreement with the statement that if social media pages reflect companies in a more positive light. 33.9 percent of social networking Americans agreed, 26 percent disagreed, and the rest remained unbiased.
