Burger King Uses Geofencing for 1 Cent Burger Promotion
Transcript from the video:
This is your Marketing Minute from Forward Push. Hey there, I’m Marc Apple and if you saw my video earlier today, you know that I had lunch at Burger King, Home of the Whopper. Although that wasn’t my intent, I really wanted to get a Big Mac from McDonald’s. But Burger King got me.
Starting today with the BK app, they are doing a promotion using marketing technology called geofencing. What’s geofencing? Well, geofencing is when you set up a perimeter, basically a fence around a location. And any time someone goes into that fence, there cell phone gets registered and now we know where they are. So, Burger King did that to me today. They knew when I got within 600 feet of a McDonald’s location. I opened my BK app and there was an offer for a one cent Whopper. I put it into my BK app that I wanted to get the one cent Whopper and it immediately gave me directions to the closest Burger King.
I got back in my car and went from McDonald’s to Burger King and I enjoyed that Whopper. That’s how great geofencing is. So, how can you use it for your business?
Let’s think of some ideas here.
What if there’s an event in town and you know that potential customers are gonna be attending this event. You could create a geofence around the event’s location. Anyone that comes into that event, their cell phone would be registered and your ads would be shown to them. Let’s take it a step further. How about you make a geofence around one of your competitor’s locations.
Every time someone goes into that competitor’s location, your ads will be shown to them. There’s a lot of different things that you can do with geofencing and it’s a great way to make sure that people that are actually looking or participating in the things that you sell, know about your business.
If you have any questions about geofencing, I’d love to answer them for you. Leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to answer. Thanks so much and I’ll see you tomorrow.
